PASTORS TAX

The debate regarding whether or not Pastors must pay taxes out of their income is coming up again. A senior Lecturer at the Department of Religious Studies the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Reverend Dr. Abamfo Ofori Atiemo, Kumasi told GBC’s Garden City Radio in Kumasi that Pastors should pay income tax out of their monthly salaries. According to him, a full time pastor works just like any other worker and must therefore pay tax as a citizen of the country. A journalist, Isaac Amoah said there are full time and part time pastors. He noted that full time pastors receive monthly payment for their services for which reason they should also pay income tax to the state for national development. Mr. Amoah urged also government to put in place good measures to ensure that churches in the country pay the income tax of their Pastors. On the contrary, Emmanuel Takyi Boahen, another media practitioner said pastors are not supposed to pay income tax to the government because what they receive at the end of every month is only an allowance and not salary as perceived.
