The National Media Commission has appealed to
all media houses to give adequate coverage to the forthcoming District Level Election
which is scheduled to take place in March.
The appeal was made during the launch
of the first monitoring report of media coverage of District Level Election
conducted by the NMC in Kumasi. The coverage in Kumasi was just about
two-point-15 percent and that of Accra was a little over one percent.
The purpose of the meeting was to enable the
NMC share its findings from the media monitoring exercise with stakeholders on
how the media is covering the District Level Elections. In a presentation, the
Technical Advisor of the National Media Commission Koshin Aden noted that the
District Level Election received very low coverage on radio.
He explained that
most radio stations took their programming from the front page stories of the
major newspapers hence little attention given to stories to District Level
Elections on radio because the stories were influenced by the little space
provided at the newspapers.
Mr. Aden indicated that data from the monitoring
shows the New Patriotic Party received significant coverage followed by the
National Democratic Congress. He said
radio coverage gave over 90 percent coverage to males as compared to seven
percent for females.
The Chairman of the NMC Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere
said, equity and fairness media coverage are the benchmark so all media houses
should do their best to give adequate attention to the District Level Election
which is very crucial and key to Ghana’s democracy.
The Regional Director of
the National Commission for Civic Education Alhassan Yakubu said the NCCE will
continue to educate the public on the need to participate in the District Level
Election.
Mr. Yakubu disclosed that jingles have been given out to the various
electronic media houses to further create awareness whiles durbars continues to
be organized.
