FULANI HERDSMEN
The Agogo Traditional Council in Ashanti has appealed to the Regional Police Command to intervene, as a matter of urgency, to protect residents from constant attacks of Fulani herdsmen.
The Krontihene of Agogo, Nana Kwame Nti, made the appeal when the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye visited the area.
He said the Agogo traditional area is one of the food baskets of the country and as such anything that will threaten food security in the area should not be countenanced. Nana Nti explained that the Fulani herdsmen who live mainly in Pataban, Owiom, Koreso and Abrewapon allow their herds of cattle to stray into the pawpaw, banana, and watermelon farms of residents to graze, destroying these farms in the process.
The Fulani herdsmen also allow their cattle to bath in, and drink from water bodies used by residents. Nana Nti mentioned some of the negative activities the Fulani herdsmen perpetrate against Agogo residents include rape, kidnapping and murder.
However farmers who decide to take the law in their hands against the herdsmen are arrested by the police. At a separate meeting with the Fulanis, the Head of the community, Alhaji Sulemana denied that Fulanis are responsible for the alleged crimes been perpetrated against Agogo residents. He emphasized that the Fulani herdsmen have genuine permits to operate within the Agogo Traditional area, adding that they go about their duties as responsible migrants.
DCOP Kofi Boakye said he will duly brief the Inspector General of Police on the issue to see how best the police can assist to ensure lasting peace between residents of Agogo and the Fulani herdsmen.
