The suspects, both natives of Tepa are Ernest Owusu Afram, 26 years
old professional nurse and Shadrack Nyame, a 39 year old driver.
Owusu Afram,
who has been on remand, is being tried for defrauding some people to the tune
of 40 thousand Ghana Cedis with the intention of securing admission for them at
the Tepa Midwifery and Nursing Training College.
He is suspected to have
collected between one thousand Ghana Cedis and 20 thousand Ghana Cedis from the
unsuspecting applicants. Owusu Afram was to face the trial judge last Wednesday
but was adjourned to next week Thursday.
Shadrack on the other hand was
arrested by the police for allegedly selling his master’s vehicle and conveying
it to Cote d’Ivoire, but lied to the owner that the vehicle had broken down on
a road somewhere in the Brong Ahafo Region. The two were the only suspects in
police cell when the escape took place.
A visit to the cell showed that the two
suspects managed to escape through a small space created to provide air into
the cell. They are believed to have used a metal blade to cut the iron bar
before escaping through the narrow space.
The Divisional Police Commander, ACP Kofi
Dwumfour Berchie said the two policemen on duty at the time of the escape have
been given 10 days to produce the suspects or face Police Service Enquiry to
try them for negligence of duty.
The District Police Commander, Superintendent
David Amoako said the incident came as a surprise because the officers on duty
were conducting hourly inspection at the cells to determine the safety of
inmates, a requirement of the Police Services Rules and Regulations.
He said
the police officers on duty could not explain the circumstances leading to the
escape of the suspects, adding that further investigations would be conducted
to ascertain how the incident occurred. Supt. Amoako said the suspects may be
hanging around Tepa and its environs.
